Jackson, MS is the county seat for Hinds County which has a population of over 176,000. The city was named after General Andrew Jackson, who was the seventh president of the United States. It is the largest city in Hinds County and one of the four county seats.

Jackson is home of the state capital which employs many residents. It also provides jobs for those in education and healthcare such as at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and St. Dominic – Jackson Memorial Hospital. Many families living in Hinds County depend on public work opportunities by commuting to one of the seven major cities within its borders: Jackson, Flowood, Pearl, Raymond, Clinton, Ridgeland and Madison.

Jackson is widely known as the home of the University of Mississippi or Ole Miss. It also has several colleges, including Belhaven College and Tougaloo College. Jackson State University is another prominent school in the city providing secondary education for Hinds County residents.

“Fondren District” in Jackson, Mississippi is a neighborhood stated to be a reminder of the importance of African American history and culture. The Fondren district has been known for its authentic eateries, stores and other attractions that cater particularly to African Americans. It was once said by Bob Santelli that he believed that “the best music in the world is made here” and has been for decades.
