Columbus, Georgia is the fourth largest city in the state of Georgia and the county seat of Muscogee County. As of 2010, Columbus had a total population of 190,882 with 100,549 households. Columbus is located in the eastern part of Georgia, about two hours away from Atlanta. It borders on Chattahoochee River and the Alabama state line. Columbus has access to many parks along the Chattahoochee River including Hard Labor Creek State Park which features trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding and paddleboat rentals.
The major industries in Columbus include textiles, steel and heavy industry which have been around since the 1800s. The city is still known for its textile mills all around town. There are also other manufacturers in Columbus including Otis Elevator Company, Outboard Marine Corporation, Tru-Stone, Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, Inc., IGS Energy and Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation.
According to the National Park Service, Columbus has 13 properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The city is also known for its historic neighborhoods. Nearby attractions include the Coca-Cola Space Science Center, Three Rivers Petroglyphs State Historic Site and Chattahoochee Riverfront Trail. There are more than 1,400 acres of protected lands in Columbia County including Hard Labor Creek State Park, Rock Eagle 4-H Educational Center and Fred Hamilton Rhododendron Garden.
